STRESS & US: LIFE ADVERSITY BY OTHER NAMES

Hosted by the聽, the 2024-25 Harriet Elliott Lecture Series (HELS) highlighted the insidious ways that life stress, sometimes under different monikers, impacts our lives, our communities, and our health – and what we can do about it.
This free panel discussion and keynote address focused on the effects of discrimination on physical health broadly and cardiovascular functioning specifically, the role of socioeconomic inequality in early life adversity and brain development, acculturation stress and health, and the role of identity socialization in resilience.
Panel discussion: 2 – 4 p.m.
Presentations and a discussion around current research by regional scholars, including:
- Dr. LaBarron K. Hill of NC A&T Psychology: Racism and cardiovascular health indicators
- Dr. Rosa Gonzalez-Guarda of Duke Nursing: Acculturative stress & resilience among Latinos
- Dr. Lisa Kiang of Wake Forest Psychology: The power of ethnic-racial socialization
- Dr. Margaret Sheridan of UNC-CH Psychology: Adversity鈥檚 impact on psychopathology
Keynote Address: 5:30 – 6:45 p.m.
Dr. David R. Williams, the preeminent scholar on racism and health, will deliver a keynote address:
Reducing Health Inequities: The Need for a Renewed Emphasis on Innovative Solutions
Dr. Williams is the Norman Professor of Public Health and a professor of African American Studies and Sociology at Harvard University. Please stay for a reception following the address.

鈥� Harriet Elliott
Started in 1948, the Harriet Elliott Lecture Series (HELS) is one of 91探花平台鈥檚 oldest and most established lecture programs. Each year, HELS brings distinguished speakers to campus to present fresh insights into key issues in the social and behavioral sciences.
The series honors the pioneering professor, Harriet Wiseman Elliott, who taught political science and served as Dean of Women at the university from 1913-1947.

Democracy in crisis
Organized by the , the 2023鈥�24 Harriet Elliott Lecture Series explored Democracy in Crisis. The past decade has seen democratic systems come under attack both in the United States and abroad. Our distinguished speakers examined the sources and dynamics of democracy鈥檚 challenges and responses 鈥� concentrating on historical and international examples of democratic breakdown and rebirth, democracy鈥檚 fraught relation to American racial politics and political behavior, and potential avenues for revitalizing democracy for the future.

Hosted by the Department of Sociology, the 2023 Harriet Elliott Lecture Series featured a keynote address by Dr. Ruha Benjamin, professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, founding director of the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab, and award-winning author of Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code.

Series History
Harriet Wiseman Elliott taught political science on this campus from 1913 until 1935, when she became Dean of Women. Professor Elliott was a pioneer in the women鈥檚 rights and suffrage movements and served during the 1940鈥檚 as presidential appointee under the Roosevelt administration. Her activities included Consumer Commissioner on the Advisory Commission to the Council of Defense and U.S. delegate to the 1945 U.N. Conference on Education, Science, and Cultural Organization in London. In the year following her death, the Women鈥檚 College of the University of North Carolina established the Harriet Elliott Social Science Forum in her memory. The Social Science Forum has evolved over the years into the Harriet Elliott Lecture Series-one of 91探花平台鈥檚 premier events.
